  Customer B
Customer B was using manual plug up on their sub contractors site with the result that:
  1. Beat rate was low.
  2. There were a very significant number of memory modules (DIMM’s) being damaged due to frequent insertions/extractions. Motherboards were also occasionally damaged during test. In this instance Customer B was responsible for supplying the CEM with memory modules to support test and this cost was considerable.
  3. The DIMM socket on the motherboard was also being damaged due to operator handling.
Tecpro introduced the AFT (Automated Functional Tester) concept, which was similar to the IFT concept whereby all connections were made automatically and the memory modules were also inserted automatically. The end result was that: -
  1. The damage to memory modules was eliminated totally as Tecpro introduced a saver card concept where the saver card thickness was reduced from 1.6mm to 1.2mm and this card was good for an average of 5000 cycles. The replacement cost of the saver was approx. $40 which was a fraction of the cost of the memory modules.
  2. Damage to motherboard DIM sockets was also eliminated totally.
  3. The CEM’s costs were reduced due to the removal of the need to do manual plug ups.
Customer B’s feedback was that the total cost of both the test base units (a generic product) and the product specific cassettes was recovered in less than six weeks. In addition the Dead-on arrival problems with boards received by Customer B were practically eliminated.
The CEM was happy as their costs had also been reduced and as such their margins increased.
 
  Customer C
Tecpro introduced an enhanced version of the AFT for customer C whereby they were able to test mother boards with the daughter boards being inserted automatically and then test daughter boards with the motherboard being in the static position, all on the one fixture. Customer C’s beat rates were dramatically increased.
 
  Customer D
Customer D had a complex plug-up test that effectively required an experienced test technician to run the test even though product costing was based on an operator conducting the test. Installation of a Tecpro functional test platform allowed Customer D to free up valuable engineering and technician resources from routine product testing. Operators were able to conduct the functional test with minimal training.
